RevYOU: Sony Ericsson W760i Walkman Phone

Made available in the latter part of 2009′s first quarter, the Sony Ericsson W760i Walkman stands by the elegance and functionality that we expected from the Japanese. Compared to other spec-heavy phones out there with maxed out cameras and touch screens, the W760i brings together the good old fashioned features that work, while subtly adding a bit of new technology without screaming too loud at about P16,000.00.

I’ve had this phone for roughly a month and a half, a little bit before it came out to the retail spaces. Here are my thoughts

What’s to like:
Camera: This isn’t a megapixel war. It’s a war on clear photos, and the humble 3.2MP camera beats most of the higher end competition. Remember, a good camera phone

Tracker: In the Philippines, I never really found a good use for a GPS tracking device for navigating the streets of Makati. The W760i comes with built in GPS and A-GPS (assisted GPS) which is put to practical use by a built in application called Tracker. If you’re the type who uses a Nike+ to run

Sound: It’s a Walkman isn’t it? The W760i comes with two booming stereo speakers that are very visible on the front face of the phone.

Track ID: This is a new feature available in most music phones. It goes by different names but it does one very interesting thing — your phone becomes a mini Gracenote DB. When a song is playing on the radio, you can turn on Track ID to let your phone listen to the track sample. It then connects to the Internet and matches the song with the artist name and song title.

What needed improvement:
Earphones set up: I always found it frustrating that whenever Sony Ericsson advertised a phone under the “Walkman” brand it would mean that the unit should come with a 3.5mm jack. This is a half truth — most entry to mid range SE Walkman phones do come with good 3.5mm earphones but the jack doesn’t plug straight into the phone. Rather, the headphones have to go through an adapter (the same slot for the charger) and not directly to the unit. If you lose the adapter, you’re screwed.

For the price you pay, you get a very good music phone that’s built to last. Perhaps my only gripe is the exclusion of WiFi, but that obviously wasn’t the target of Sony Ericsson. But you know what, I can go rambling on all day about this phone — I want to hear what you think, and get your name and review published on the tech section of the magazine!

If you own a Sony Ericsson W760i, this page is for you.

We’re building a new section in UNO and it’s kicking off with tech. Going online presents new possibilities in marrying the joys of sexy, printed paper with the here-and-now of the Internet. We call this section RevYOU and it builds heavily on the wisdom of many people who own a particular piece of technology — yet oftentimes don’t agree with the one guy who wrote the gadget review on the glossy. So yeah, as both UNO’s tech editor and online editor I thought of bringing the community of readers together to review a particular product and come June ’09, I’m going to compile and publish this inside the magazine — with your name beside the one liners of user experience you have with the Sony Ericsson W760i. Tell us what you like about it. Tell us what you don’t like about it — you can use the comments section at the bottom of this page.

And please, put your real name, a valid email address and if you have one, a blog — because we’re going to raffle off something as well before we go to print ;) If you want to leave more than one comment, then go ahead — but remember, each answer must be unique!

I like the videodj feature of the phone. MobileVideo editing with a professinal feel. An important thing if you are mobile blogging.

  • as a blogger, this phone is a perfect gadget for me. There’s an option that you can post your blog entry directly to your blogspot blog (blogger.com), and since I’m a blogspot user, this phone introduced me in mobile blogging. SE W760i and blogger.com did partnered on this and posting blogs via mobile is easy when you are on the go. Also recording videos for 30 seconds is perfect for posting it as a video blog. I like the audio recording features, so clear and it can record even the source of sound is far away, I’m using it during talks, seminars and also interviewing people (I also use it in recording rock concerts music ). I’m a heavy user of the SE W670i’s camera in photo and video for mobile blogging.

I loooveeee the Motion Sensor especially when playing the games (read: Need for Speed). It gives a great feel for the game with real-time reaction from the user. Another great addition is the Location Services and Tracker application. Great for when you’re driving around the city and needing directions (but don’t feel like asking)…:p

  • As a student and blogger who’s always on the go, this has been a very useful phone in my daily activities. The camera is great for taking pictures of simple food photography, pictures of events and places I’ve been to, and it’s also great for taking pictures of things I want to share with my friends online. The video recording feature is just as useful for capturing those unforgettable memories that I want to remember, or want to share with everyone else. Not to mention the fantastic walkman feature that’s able to play my favorite music to a somewhat large group of friends, or for listening to when I want to drown out the noise from the outside world. Now, I can’t even begin to imagine not having my SE W760i phone beside me, when I’m doing work or just lounging about.

    LIKES:

Applications: Though I can’t seem to get Opera Mini working, being able to install apps on a non-smartphone phone is great.

Built-in speakers: Has impressive built-in stereo speakers for a phone of its range.

Camera: This 3.2MP camera camphone makes for a pleasurable than usual mobile shooting experience.

Mobile browsing: Makes you think it will be difficult to browse the internet using the phone’s native browser, but its easy! And HSDPA is a big plus.

    DISLIKES:

Non-standard earphone jack: This would have been a lovely portable radio, media player, if it only had the normal 3.5 earphone jack.

Slow motion sensor: Works fine with a fun app like Lightsaber, but its slow if you enable it in some of the installed games, like Need For Speed.

Awkward menu formats integration: You have your normal phone menu format, then it gives you a PSP-like menu format whenever you access media.

  • karla says:

Like what Rain has mentioned, I really don’t like the non-standard earphone jack. If it was using a 3.5mm jack, you have more options just in case your headset gets lost.

The camera is also good and it records video with decent audio quality. Audio quality for the voice recorder is also good enough. Anyway, I just find it weird that I can only zoom at lower image resolutions. However, I would not really expect so much from its camera since it is a walkman phone anyway.

I also love the games pre-installed in the phone. Asteroids FTW!!! :D

  • nina says:

It has everything I need to keep me occupied during those long bus rides: a camera, an mp3 player and an Internet browser.

  • Jonel says:

This is my first mobile browser phone. And being a travel blogger, this has helped me a lot. Just recently, I went to the far flung province of Sagada in northern Philippines and I used the W760i’s HSDPA enabled, 3G service to access the internet and update my blog with the details of my travel!

  • arpee lazaro says:

one of the things i love about the w760i is that is so easy to navigate. there isn’t much need to read the manual because the phone is very user-friendly. the w760i is feature-rich with it’s big stereo speakers and 2GB memory. it’s worth the price tag!

  • Lace Llanora says:

Sony Ericsson W760i is sexy! It’s slim and black, and has a smooth slide. What I love about it is the 3.2MP camera which allows me to shoot everywhere, even in areas where one is not allowed to take pictures (e.g. malls and events). However, I don’t like how the camera’s zoom function is disabled unless you choose VGA mode. The video capture is great in MP4 which is easily convertible and has decent quality that is acceptable to YouTube. Since the phone comes with its own memory stick, one can shoot, shoot, and shoot! BUT, I don’t like how the memory stick’s size is not compatibe to most card readers, that I have to use a USB cable and get all wired up. With regards to the music, I can only store around 10 to 15 songs but the playlist function is really helpful. The movement sensor for the walkman mode is driving me crazy though, I have not mastered how to turn up the volume with a flick of a hand.

What I like MOST is the Internet Browser that reminds me of Firefox, fast, uncluttered and simple. Not only can one shoot on the go with Sony Ericsson W760i but twit, plurk, and blog! What more can I ask for? This unit is my best phone so far.

  • Ade says:

The non-standard phone jack is my biggest gripe with this phone. I’ve been using this more than my iPod lately (because it delivers a better sound), and the adapter is now loose. If I change my walking pace, for example, I’d lose the sound in one ear.

My second gripe is with the sluggish UI and the constant random reboots this phone is seemingly prone to. I’ve tried upgrading the firmware but it says I have the latest version. I’m too much of a sissy to reinstall the current one.

But all in all, I’m pretty satisfied with the w760.

  • Sony Sony Ericsson W760i is so user-friendly and I verified this fact when my techno-phobe husband used his phone without much tutorial from me or even reading the user manual. He was using his phone right away.

Aside from using it as a phone, I use it mainly for taking videos because it is so handy to carry. In the past, I’ve always had a camera with video functionality but rarely use its video function. In the event that I left my point and shoot camera at home, I take photos using my SE w760i. A really cool and handy phone to own.

  • Didi says:

Love it to bits because its an all in one gadget! Internet capable, check! MP3 Player, check! Video playing capabilities, check! Camera (not bad with the 3.2mp), check! Perfect for moblogging!!

  • Aileen Apolo says:

It’s the only phone that successfully connects me to the internet. I have two other phones (a different brand) and it’s really been frustrating to go online using it. The Sony Ericsson W760i mobile internet experience is enjoyable and satisfying since it allows me to be online anytime, anywhere. I also love the multiple alarm feature it has coz I need that many alarms to get me out of bed, LOL.

  • Aiza says:

    My SE W760i is my:
    1. backup camera – it takes really nice photos
    2. wireless modem – no need for those wireless usb dongles
    3. mini organizer – seamlessly synchs my outlook stuff
    4. guitar tuner – ’nuff said
    5. music player – thanks to the 2gig memory card

It’s so slim and handy, makes for sosy looking phone, without the hefty tag price.

But I do agree with Jayvee, it would have been better if you have the earphones connect directly on the phone. I just lost my jack connector. It sucks.

  • Kiven says:

I love the build/form factor and the multimedia and internet capabilities.

  • What I like about Sony Ericsson W760i is the good quality pictures it can produce. My brother even use my phone’s camera rather than his “other brand mobile” camera. I ask him why and he said “He looks a lot better on my phone’s camera than his”, and it doesn’t even need a flash in order to produce good quality pics.

There are also a wide array of java games which can be played with the Sony Ericsson W760i (Check your Network Wapsites for games). A good past time and stress reliever when waiting for someone or something.

A great tool for mobile blogging. It has integration with blogspot or your choice of mobile blogging service provider. a nifty tool for the those moments when the itch for blogging can’t be set aside.

  • My friends don’t believe it when I say that the pictures I usually upload in Facebook account were taken by my SE W760i. I love taking pictures on the go and the Photo DJ app is simply fantastic.

I also use this to surf the internet on the go. I just wished it had WiFi.

  • Tess Termulo says:

I got to admit having the w760i inspired me to start a mobile blog on my present life as an IM resident. Running around the hospital all day and night would require me to having a mobile phone that has the ability to upload photos and blog post on the go. And the phone did provide me with that capability. The 3.2 megapixel camera is enough to provide photos good for a medium-sized blog photo. Of course, the internet and media capabilities all help me maintain the mobile blog.

What I don’t like about the phone is the earphones. I always forget to bring the adapter and that can really be frustrating. I wish it came with the regular jack so that I could use my favorite earphones with the w760i. Better if I could charge and plug the earphones at the same time.

  • My wife calls my W760i “my PSP”, and can’t get enough of playing “Need for Speed Prostreet” on it, she already bought 4 tricked out cars! Bonus: tilt the phone and the race car moves!

  • Quickly loses battery life (1 day standby). But nifty when used as powerpoint slide remote control via bluetooth.

  • L.A says:

Well W760i makes decent photos on well lighted place, no flash means no picture taking on dim places, another downside is that it doesn’t support connection via WiFi. The only thing I like about it is the music player (since it’s really a Music Phone = W Series) but then again a 3.5mm is much better for earphones, and also I can feel that my keypad is flipping out of its case.

  • 2per Santos says:

my w760i sounds crisp and clear whether i use the earphones or the built-in speaker. its nice sound quality is good company in my daily commute. also, the w760i plays a bigger part in my routine than i thought it would do. the user interface of the phone requires less finger movement for mobile browsing, and its simple menus make sending content through the internet really easy. it is a nice way of browsing the Web when you’re on the go. this phone seems to have been designed to put the Web in your pocket the way walkman did with music.

  • Richard says:

its another great innovation on the series of its family of walkman phones, maintaining the shake feature ,now with GPS, HSDPA and its nice image quality camera. but i had to warn you, my previous W850i, as a slider phone, within a year of its use was broken and have to be repaired, they say its because of it’s sliding feature, having the the thin film/chip inside moving back and forth, may make it worn out fast, well i hope they’ve already improved it in this latest model.

  • jun says:

for its size, i think it is relatively light. I just found out that the two buttons on top show you pics hehehe. the left one to slideshow, the right by month.

  • Lowell B. Aguirre says:

I bought my Sony Ericsson W760i Walkman Cell Phone last April 8. As expected It’s just packed with features. The interface is easy to use and it works well for everything you need to do with it. I’m very impressed overall. It has everything I like in a phone. I should say it is one of those phones that I can easily recommend to anyone who asks me about a great phone.

  • Carlo says:

The W760i is a great phone. The camera takes good pictures given there’s a good lighting. The video feature is also good enough.

One feature it should really have is Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi). Also I noticed, there’s SIP settings on the SETTINGS menu but I can’t figure out how to make calls through SIP.

Battery life is also good. I recharge mine for only once a week.

Overall, I can give the phone a rating of 7/10.
