MEET YOUR UNO CONTRIBUTOR: Patricia Evangelista
Posted by Erwin Romulo at June 28th, 2009If you ask me, I’d suggest you buy the UNO’s June issue just to read Patricia Evangelista’s A Quarter Inch of Shadow, which is probably my favorite piece in the whole magazine. Pat also produces a show on ANC called Storyline which is the only show that can keep me staying in on Friday nights, knowing full well that it isn’t mindless entertainment. Best thing on local TV out there. Anyway, check out her columns in the Philippine Daily Inquirer in particular this one.
It’s writers like Pat that makes Uno worth doing.
How To Win in an Election
Posted by Jayvee at June 27th, 2009By Ricky Carandang as told to Erwin Romulo
Ricky Carandang is an anchor for the ANC News Channel as well as host for The Big Picture. One of the country’s most respected broadcast journalists, his most recent program, Buy The Numbers, exposes the ways Philippine elections can be won as well as tackling the issues surrounding the planned automation for the 2110 polls.

IF YOU’RE RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE…
The first thing you need is a lot of money. This is what I’ve heard. Assuming you don’t get the votes, then you have to figure out a way to manufacture them. Some of it might be considered improper or unethical, but not necessarily illegal. Well, some of it is plainly illegal, but most of it is in a sort of grey area.
People tell me that local elections actually have a lot more integrity than the national because it’s so closely fought. If you’re a national candidate, you’ll also end up depending on these local guys to bring in the votes and guard them. They basically run the elections—manage the elections in their municipalities on behalf of their candidates, watching each other like a hawk, knowing everybody around. These informal checks and balances on the local level are much more effective. But these guys are gonna be fighting for themselves, you’re secondary if you’re a national candidate. Their concern for you is secondary to their own election. So chances are, they tend not to watch your votes as closely.
WHO GETS PAID?

Pasta Groove’s Give Bearth
Posted by Erwin Romulo at June 19th, 2009UNO favorite Pasta Groove has a new video up online for the opening track of his album, The Distinktive Sounds of Pasta Grooove. Conceived/cut/reworked by his alter ego Paolo Garcia, it’s pretty much the perfect companion to the the sound of PG, sampling various media including footage from LVN Pictures’ classics such as Kundiman ng Lahi and Mutya ng Pasig, Ishmael Bernal’s debut feature Pagdating sa Dulo, Gerry de Leon’s drive-in classic The Blood Drinkers and more. On the track itself, the music features an array of musicians including Malek Lopez, Allen Umali and Armi Millare among others.

Editor-at-Large Luis Katigbak reviews the album as one of the best albums released so far this year in our June issue with Celine Lopez on the cover.

VIDEO: Behind the Scenes with Celine Lopez
Posted by Jayvee at June 18th, 2009
“Evil is organic. The fight against it is what makes us human.” Celine Lopez has just come back from Delhi. Meeting up with her, it isn’t long—five minutes probably—before the conversation turns to the usual things: sickness, art, politics, fascists, Bowie, pornography, and the devil—the dark stuff. The remark was her answer to the question if she thought evil existed. It seemed apt only because it was also posed to both Barack Obama and John McCain during the last US election. If it’s good enough for presidential candidates, then it was good enough to ask Celine. In fact, for the brevity and wit alone, she gets my vote.

MEET YOUR UNO CONTRIBUTOR Series: Alexis Tioseco
Posted by Erwin Romulo at June 12th, 2009THE PASSION OF ALEXIS TIOSECO
UNO contributor and film critic extraordinaire Alexis Tioseco is doing a series of film showings of things you won’t see anywhere else. Highly regarded as the best local writer on cinema around, he also curates and holds discussions after, explaining why the hell does he bother educating the Filipino audience about the movies he loves and thinks we should all see. Apparently, it’s because he cares… but I don’t believe him.

Fun Facts About the UNO Staff, Part 1
Posted by Luis Katigbak at June 12th, 20091. During one overnight editing/writing session at the office, Contributing Editor Mihk Vergara demonstrated his heretofore secret ability to turn his head 270 degrees around, like an owl. Unfortunately he threw up a lot afterwards and had to be rushed to the hospital.
2. Editorial Assistant extraordinaire France Pinzon is not named after France the geographical location. Rather, she is France, the corporeal form of the essence of an entire country. She took human form to learn more about people, and migrated here after she realized she didn’t like the people in France so much. She spends her spare time scoffing at tourist guides that “get me all wrong.”
3. Creative Director Juan Caguicla was raised in the wild by a roaming pack of savage tattoo artists. One day, after his pack suffered a vicious raid by their mortal enemies, a gang of bloodthirsty photographers, he found an abandoned Rolleiflex 2.8F TLR. Though he knew it was forbidden, he could not resist figuring out how to use the implement and soon spent many a day testing its limits. When his treachery was discovered, his full-body tattoo rite of manhood was cancelled (to this day, one arm is almost completely bare), and he was banished from his pack. Now he is an outcast from both tribes, who uses his powers for the good of all.
The Miseducation of Maggie Wilson
Posted by Jayvee at June 11th, 2009

While other girls her age went off to college to become nurses, accountants or pre-school teachers, Margaret Nales Wilson opted for a different kind of education‚ how to be herself. And like any regular undergraduate course, it took her around four years to go from punk rock girl to beauty queen to one of today’s hottest TV personalities.

Now a tough and smart 20-year-old with the poise and confidence of a 30-year-old, she gives us a summary of what she has learned by being bold, crazy and basically doing what she wants to do.
What Age Requirements?
Maggie first learned how to ignore age requirements when she joined the MTV VJ Hunt. Though she impressed MTV, she didn’t get the job because she was then only 15, three years short of the minimum age requirement.
But the music channel liked her so much that when she was about to turn 18, they‚ like the proverbial 20-year-old boy waiting in the car with her girlfriend on the eve of her eighteenth birthday‚ called her and asked her if she wanted to VJ for them. ‘It was kinda cool because they hired me without even asking me to do an audition,’ Maggie says.
Now with MTV Philippines for three years, she says its the job where she doesn’t feel like she’s working. ‘I love it. Seriously.’ And despite the occupational hazards, like going to concerts, parties and out-of-town events‚ and being paid for it‚ she hopes to be in the job for a few more years.

Maggie is one of our bombshell ladies gracing the insides of the new UNO fresh from the press. If you check out the stands, you will notice that the magazine is significantly bigger than its predecessor with a glossy paper stock and embossed front cover. For more photos of Maggie Wilson and the full article, check out the latest issue now available in bookstores and magazine stands.
