The UP Film Institute announces its screenings for November 2009. Fitting opener for the second semester of the current school year is the full run for Manila – the celebrated Piolo Pascual double starrer from internationally acclaimed and prize-winning directors Adolfo Alix Jr. and Raya Martin. The distinct engagement for Manila segues to another Raya Martin film Now Showing, which had its world premiere at the 40th Director’s Forthnight of the Cannes International Film Festival. We also honor the work and vision of young film critic Alexis Tioseco whose tragic death has left a community in mourning. In his memory, we programmed 2 films he’s championed, namely Bontoc Eulogy by Marlon Fuentes and Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind by John Gianvito. We are also particularly honored to screen Gianvito’s homage to Alexis and Nika Bohinc via A Candle.
Courtesy of the Embassy of Brazil is an exciting cinema package of titles for four Fridays at the Videotheque - Bossa Nova, O Outro Lado Da Rua, A Dona Da Historia and Abril Despecado.
Completing the lineup is a trio of surprise classics for a Philippine gothic showcase.
We have prepared a very exciting programme this month so hope to see you! Please forward to family, friends and colleagues, and invite them to visit and support the U.P. Film Institute. Thank you very much.
.MOV and Batang West Triangle Screenings: Jorgen Leth
A note from Jorgen Leth: “I will select some clips and discuss things like “pure filmmaking”, deconstruction, language, grammar, putting the single image above context, working with a single roll and “hypnotic implicity”, making films like notebooks, the existential feeling of time passing through a film scene, working with movements and time, inspirations like The Living Theatre, Grotowski, Godard, Cassavetes, Dreyer, Julie Rainer, Warhol, talk about “cinema pauvre, using Bolex, the film roll counts down of eternity, about fascination and curiosity as the motor for my filmmaking, about the necessity to reinvent film language, to question what is image, what is sound, what is editing, or discuss my confidence in chance. I see chance always as a gift in fiction as well as in documentary, my idea that film should be like poems, don’t know where it goes and why, never wrote a script, not even for my fiction films, the idea of studying human actions and being under a microscope, people doing simple things, facing camera, no need to move around and be busy etc., and basic thoughts like bringing order in chaos, the clarity of tableaux. There are many angles to talk about my method, as you can see – also how to travel, how to use your senses. I work with rules of game, as in “The Five Obstructions”, limitations, in some films camera can’t move, in other no editing. I would like to discuss all these kind of basic and maybe shocking ideas with the students.”
Jorgen Leth will conduct as Master Class on Nov.13, Friday at 2 p.m. Fully Booked Bonifacio High St. In cooperation with Khavn dela Cruz, Society of Film Archivists of the Philippines (SOFIA) and Uno Magazine.
“Like Wolverine, James Jean is the best at what he does. Unlike Wolverine, James Jean doesn’t kill people with razors that pop out of his hand. You might not know James Jean by name but you’ve seen his work. His art’s all over the place. It’s in galleries, on Prada bags, album covers, in magazines and on the covers of DC comics. Tom Herpich and Kenichi Hoshine are simlarly talented and definitely blow minds with their intense talent and vision but James Jean is the king. James’ drawings have sophistication, power and delicacy beyond what most drawers can muster.”
James Jean is coming to Manila and we’re all excited. We were so excited that we called up Fully Booked and asked them to do this raffle with us. So we’re now running this contest, and Fully Booked is giving away these great prizes. Honestly, we want them for ourselves.
