    Dex Fernandez and – + *

    January 22, 2010

    no7
Come to the first solo exhibit of Dex Fernandez, – + *, from January 20 to February 24, 2010, at PABLO Fort, Taguig.

There are more joys and brand new pains we ought to embrace and expect to be coming in as there is no definite thing in this world but death and change and perhaps, the evolution of symbols, maybe? There are few more other things you have yet to unearth and know. And what you don’t know just won’t hurt you. And what doesn’t hurt us doesn’t mean anything at all as hurting, falling, living, and dying is all part of the process of uncovering a symbol or being a symbol yourself. Because if you don’t symbolize anything, it only means one thing: That you do not exist.

A PUPIL once asked Confucius: “If the Prince of Mei appointed you head of the government, to what would you first set you mind?”

Confucius replied: “To call people and things by their names, that is by their correct denomination, to see that the terminology was exact.”

The pupil could not believe his own ears. His master’s reply seemed beside the point.

Noting his incredulity, the master said: “You are a blank. An intelligent man hesitates to talk of what he doesn’t understand, he feels embarrassment.

“If the terminology be not exact, if it fit not the thing, the governmental instructions will not be explicit, if the instructions aren’t clear and the names don’t fit, you cannot conduct business properly.

“If business is not properly run, the rites and music will not be honoured, if the rites and music be not honoured, penalties and punishments will not achieve their intended effects, if penalties and punishments do not produce equity and justice, the people won’t know where to put their feet or what to lay hold of or to whom they should stretch out their hands.

“That is why an intelligent man cares for his terminology and gives instructions that fit. When his orders are clear and explicit they can be put into effect.”

The gist of what the philosopher said is that good government is founded on respect for the truth.

The Tioseco-Bohinc Film Series: Ray Gibraltar’s “When Timawa Meets Delgado”

    January 15, 2010

The Tioseco-Bohinc Film Series picks up where Alexis Tioseco left off with his Fully Booked screenings, casting light on independent cinema that deserve more audience than it has.

An extension of the tireless passion and unconditional love both he and Nika Bohinc put into giving permanence and viability to truly independent cinema, it is also an active remembering of their work and life.

Long championed by Alexis Tioseco, Ray Gibraltar’s “When Timawa
Meets Delgado” (2007) is one of local independent cinema’s best-kept
secrets, an experimental narrative documentary about health care and
the nursing boom in the country that is virtually indescribable and
    also funny as hell.

The film will be shown on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Fully Booked
High Street (U-View) from 3 PM to 5 PM. Filmmaker Ray Gibraltar and poet
J.I.E. Teodoro will be in attendance. Admissions is free, hope to see you there.

    Malice In Wonderland

What would Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland be without the Cheshire Cat, the trial, the Duchess’s baby or the Mad Hatter’s tea party? Look at the original story that the author told Alice Liddell and her two sisters one day during a boat trip near Oxford, though, and you’ll find that these famous characters and scenes are missing from the text.

As I embarked on my DPhil investigating Victorian literature, I wanted to know what inspired these later additions. The critical literature focused mainly on Freudian interpretations of the book as a wild descent into the dark world of the subconscious. There was no detailed analysis of the added scenes, but from the mass of literary papers, one stood out: in 1984 Helena Pycior of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had linked the trial of the Knave of Hearts with a Victorian book on algebra. Given the author’s day job, it was somewhat surprising to find few other reviews of his work from a mathematical perspective. Carroll was a pseudonym: his real name was Charles Dodgson, and he was a mathematician at Christ Church College, Oxford.
