How to get a US VISA

April 30, 2010

By Her Excellency Kristie A. Kenney as told to Erwin Romulo, originally published in September 2009.

KNOW YOUR VISAS
If you go to our webpage, it’ll show you the different kinds of Visas ‘cause obviously you’d like to know what kind. Student, work, travel or if you’re immigrating with family members and then they’ll tell you how you could get an appointment for which kind of Visa that you need. How’s that for easy? All of it is on manila.usembassy.gov.

BLIND APPLICATION
Our consular experts post all the information, but again since every case is different, you might be looking to study, you might be a seaman going on a ship, who knows? So you don’t want to be applying for the wrong Visa bringing the wrong information. One common mistake you’d make is applying for the wrong kind of Visa. So if you’re going to go study there’s a Visa for students or if you’re going to go for work… So if you show up saying “Hi! I want a student Visa,” but you don’t have all the documents that students need so your mistake is getting the wrong kind of Visa. You need to have checked out ahead of time what kind of Visa that you’ll need.

WHY ALL THE SCREW UPS
Because they (people) don’t pay attention. So you know you’re going to study but you actually haven’t done the things our laws require, like getting accepted to a school, or you haven’t brought the information with you that shows you have. Our laws require us to get the right kind, like if you go on a ship and you don’t have the right documents for it, you just haven’t paid attention. Remember: “What am I doing and why?”

DON’T BE STEPPIN’
Be truthful; you don’t have to make up an elaborate story. That’s what my colleagues at work tell me. The honest answer of “here’s what I’m doing and here’s why.”

I JUST WANT TO GO TO THE STATES
That’s perfectly fine. “I want to go visit the United States, I’m _______. This is what I do for a living, this is why I’m coming back, and this is what I want to do.” Sounds like a good story to me but of course I’m not a consular official so you can’t actually take that to the bank.
