Nacionalista senatorial bet Atty. Adel Tamano lives and breathes pressure. Currently the United Opposition spokesperson and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila President, the 40-year-old son of both a former Senator (Mamintal Tamano) and a social civic leader (Hadja Putri Zorayda Abbas Tamano) explains the high expectations he needs to live up to in order to justify a seat in the Senate, “[It is] the pressure to continue my father’s legislative work in education and Muslim and Mindanaoan representation. It has been nearly two decades since we have had a Muslim in the Senate, and there is definitely clamor—from both Muslims and Christians—to give Muslims and Mindanaoans a voice in the Upper House.”

Aside from this familial competition, which he describes as “healthy” (“I believe all children should strive to exceed their parents”), Adel envisions a better Philippines, with education at the forefront of his initiatives, complementing his strong youth advocacy. “I want to make that nationwide and provide free college education to the poor,” he shares.

On the lighter side of things, Adel, being a self-confessed fashion enthusiast, admits that a pair of jeans, a crisp white polo shirt, and good quality leather shoes would be the perfect everyday get-up for him.

As for his other fashion fixation: “I have the weirdest hair. It grows outward with a semi-wave or kulot. It is incredibly unruly, and I take pains to tame it with prodigious amounts of hair product,” Adel admits.

Living up to a legacy, fighting for the Philippine youth, and taming a reckless mane: from where we’re standing, it seems that Atty. Adel Tamano will not only survive, but thrive under all the expectations.
