SPLINTR Unplugged

July 21, 2010

by Anna Hyde

For the people who enjoy rocking their socks off to the local music scene, where instead you get to sit back and relax while holding a glass of wine or some Jack if you prefer. Set in a theatrical scene where you think you’re going to see a classical play and instead you get four of the Philippines biggest bands joining together for a two night special acoustic performance. For the first time Splintr.com brings Splintr Unplugged, directed by Quark Henares.

Two Saturdays of live band performances by Sinosikat, Typecast, Greyhoundz and Slapshock going all out acoustic style.

June 19 opened with Sinosikat accompanied by New York musicians Dave Eggar on the cello, Yossi Ganav on vilon and Chuck Palmer on percussions. It was hard to stay still on your seat especially when Dave Eggar joined them on stage, with his cello becoming his dancing partner swaying it to and fro with half the hairs on his bow flying about as he played to the music.

They were later followed by Typecast, who from their usual post-hardcore/ rock genre performed popular songs such as Boston Drama and Will I Ever Learn with a more relaxing feel while Steve Badiola, Chi Ressureccion and Pakoy Fletchero sat comfortably on high chairs on the theatrical stage.

June 26 was the most popular night where tickets pretty much sold out for the performances of Greyhoundz and Slapshock. Greyhoundz gave a surprisingly successful acoustic performance by turning classic heavy hits such as “Pigface” and “Your Puppet and Clown” a few notches down to something with a more melodic and emotional touch. I think having Reg Rubio and Audie Avenido sitting on a big velvety couch on stage surrounded by chandeliers and soft light helped with the mood.

Following Greyhoundz was Slapshock giving a similar surprising acoustic performance with guest violinist *insert name* introducing the band with the famous melody “Speak Softly Love” from The Godfather.

Let’s hope that Splintr.com continues with more future gigs like this one!
