The hills of Montserrat are alive. Not with the sound of music, but with the zero degrees chilling wind that numbs the ligaments. It’s a good thing Andi Manzano is here to keep us warm.
The Benedictine Abbey located in the mountain ranges of Montserrat serves as one of the many retreats towards religion. Part tourist attraction, part town, part graveyard and all Roman Catholic, the Abbey is well known for the black statue of the Lady of Montserrat. And Joan of Arc. And St. Francis of Loyola. How we wish our local churches had rockstars like these.
The ‘Baguio’ of Barcelona is an hour’s drive from the city. You can get there by bus or via cable car. We suggest the former unless you’re prepared for the cold. This was a side trip — a brief respite from the overcrowded convention halls of Mobile World Congress.
By tradition, MWC is a boring telco conference. This year, Google aims to change that with Bar Android. 1/3 Bar, 1/2 gadget playground + a slide that takes you from the second floor down. And to think they didn’t launch anything significant at MWC save for the quite useless but fun Androidify app for their phones.
Ask any independent software vendor (ISV) if they want to program for multiple versions of the same operating system and they’ll tell you “Hell no!” [ZDNet]
If you take a step back to appreciate the sexier part of smartphones, you will come to the conclusion that there are at least relevant 4 players in the market today: RIM’s line of BlackBerry devices, Apple’s indomitable iPhone, Google’s ubiquitous Android platform and Microsoft’s sexy new Windows Phone 7 environment. There are other players — such as Nokia’s Symbian and HP’s webOS (formerly Palm). When a consumer buys into one platform, he makes an emotional investment. It’s not easy to switch from say, an iPhone to a BlackBerry. But when that does happen, there’s an emotional response (i.e. “I should have done this a long time ago!”). And most consumers do stick with one platform because of the apps and peripherals they’ve invested, i.e. you wouldn’t want the countless 0.99 cent apps you spent on the iTunes store to go to waste! Hey it’s Jayvee. It’s been a hectic week in Barcelona, covering the Mobile World Congress. For those uninformed, MWC is kinda like Fashion Week, but instead of new trends in fashion being announced in Paris, we’ve got all the new trends in smartphones and tablet devices announced in Barcelona. If it’s got a SIM card slot, it’s probably here.
Before, MWC used to be a stuck-up, ultra-technical conference for telcos. This year, we’re seeing more fun and casual things. Twitter is here. So is Facebook. And Google. Angry Birds too.
Stay tuned! I’ll be giving you the lowdown on what to expect in 2011.
Oh and we have our charming little DJ friend Andi9 with us on this trip!
