Captain Barbel – Edu Manzano for Vice President

As told to Patricia Evangelista | Illustration by Gilbert Daroy

My name is Eduardo Barrios Manzano, and I am fifty-four years old, and I am running for the position of Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines.

I am a dual citizen. I joined the United States Air Force. I took up my basic training in Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

I took a special test and as per the results of the test they figured that I’d be very good in engineering so then I was transferred to F.E Warren Airforce base, and I joined the Missile Engineering department.

I came home because my father was not well.

I took modeling jobs on the side, and I was a production assistant for Mr. Basil Valdez.

I had a chance to be a writer so I started writing for a man called Ariel Ureta. I used to do his skits for a show called “Ariel After 6.” One day, the artist who was supposed to perform for the skit never showed up. So they were saying if there’s one person who knows the skit by heart, it’s none other than the writer, “So why don’t you have Edu do it?” and so I did. And when we came back the next day, and the next day, and, the rest is history.

I started getting small roles; they thought that I had a pretty good sense of humor.

I think I hold the record of having the biggest flops in Philippine cinema history. Thank you very much.

How to Be a Perfect Human Being

by Ramon Bautista as told to Erwin Romulo | Photography by Dix Buhay

Every great person has humble beginnings; like superheroes. Any good stories that made you who you are today?
RA Rivera discovered me and made me an action star. I would be a taong grasa if I didn’t agree to do scenes with Jun Sabayton.

How do you maintain your marvelous physique?
Basketball, football, wrestling, and Formula One racing—these are the games I play on the PlayStation.

As we all know, you are a very wise man. Just how smart are you, and how did you attain this level of intellectual superiority?
That question is void because my intelligence is immeasurable, like love.

Do you have a secret identity?
Yes, I am “Erwin Romulo” on Friendster.

    ULTRA: IN WITH THE NEW

EVERYWHERE WE SHOOT! Photography and Styling | Julie Ebio, Make Up For Ever Make Up | Ara Fernando, L’Oreal Professionnel Hair
Shot on location at Leeroy New’s studio in SikatunaVillage, Quezon City

Leeroy New’s sculptures have been described as strange, provocative, hyperreal, as “transformations of sci-fi mythology.” The artist himself is just as hard to describe—so being lazy bastards, we decided to let him do it instead. Here’s Leeroy filling in the blanks:

I am psychopompous and I am blobject.
These days, polymers keep me busy.
Sometimes I wish I could be a ninja assassin.
Style is a way of doing (things). My style materially manifests itself.
I collect skills in making…and all kinds of junk.
    Kuya Edward cuts my hair.
My favorite animal is deep fried to perfection.
I would wear anything to my wedding.
My favorite piece of jewelry is plaster stuck in my hair and nails.
    I go shopping for materials.
    I wear my clothes out.

ON SPLASH PAGE: PUMA hooded  sweatshirt
ON OPENING SPREAD: PUMA Archive Track Jacket, PUMA Pants
ON OPPOSITE PAGE: Fred Perry Japan Button Down Polo, PUMA Shoes, Leeroy’s own ripped denim

    THE REDHEAD MODEL SEARCH

What girl wouldn’t want to be a fashion model?
When GTW of SM Department Store recently launched the Redhead Model Search to find the next three ambassadors for the clothing brand, the answer was clear as swarms of young, fashionable, outgoing gals flocked to the Virtual Catwalk tour to join the search.

With a total of eight stops during the mall tour, aspiring models walked the Redhead Virtual Catwalk and had a blast. Not only did the participants show off their glamour and get to strut their stuff in front of the camera, but they also got free mini makeovers courtesy of Maybelline.

For those who couldn’t make it to the tour, the girls uploaded their entries online for a chance to be the next face of Redhead.
