Haven’t heard of Deftones? That’s impossible.

    Deftones Diamond Eyes

EVERYBODY knows who Deftones are. That’s how amazing this band is. Ever since they were formed in 1988 in Sacramento, California, they haven’t stopped making and playing songs we fans like to call masterpieces.

The band consist of Chino Moreno on lead vocals and guitar, Stephen Carpenter on guitar, Chi Cheng on bass, Frank Delgado on keyboards and turntables, and Abe Cunningham on drums and percussion. To date, they have released SIX brilliant albums from Adrenaline (1994–1996), Around the Fur (1997–1999), White Pony (2000–2002), Deftones (2003–2005), Saturday Night Wrist (2006–2007), and the latest and most amazing yet, Diamond Eyes (2010-present). SPLINTR.COM Presents Deftones Live in Manila!

    December 13, 2010

Never your average hard rock band

Deemed as one of the biggest musical acts of this generation, DEFTONES is more than just your average rock band. With millions of albums sold and jam-packed concerts all over the world, this band has embedded its name in rock history. Manila, we present to you – DEFTONES: Diamond Eyes Tour!

    Deftones

What started out as a five-piece band from Sacramento, experimenting with The Smiths, Pantera, The Cure and The Smurfs, Deftones now brings you one of the most compelling records of their career. With 23 years of non-stop rocking under their belt, Deftones has managed to stay on top amidst the constantly changing musical styles of the generation.“There are so many emotions that music can give you, and if you explore all sides of those, it can be really amazing”, says frontman Chino Moreno. “Like sadness — it can be really lovely, or beautiful, or wide open, or coarse. We connect with different emotions because we listen to everything from dumb music or something by Brian Eno. Then when we play, it’s not a real conscious thing, but the emotion builds and it takes us in a lot of different ways. I think that’s what music is supposed to do”.

Guitarist Stephen Carpenter and Moreno are the dynamic duo behind Deftones’ records. “What makes us work?” asks Carpenter. “Chino will give you the exact opposite answer that I do. That’s the way it is with us, we contradict each other constantly but it’s also what makes our music what it is, intense and different”.The band has played with punk rockers, L7, and toured with Metallica. Lacking genre classification, they appeal to a wide range of music lovers. “We’re not a party band, but we’re not a dark rock band”, says Moreno. “We’re not the most wildly artistic band, but we’re not light and fluffy. It’s hard to put us in one place. I don’t blame people when they try to do it, because I can’t even pin it myself. But really, does it matter?”

The sixth album, Diamond Eyes, was recorded after their best friend and bassist Chi Cheng sustained a debilitating brain injury from a car accident in November of 2008. Treating the incident as inspiration rather than a hindrance, the band decided to make the sixth album more spontaneous and optimistic. With the help of former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega and producer Nick Raskulinecz (of Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, and Rush fame), Diamond Eyes was completed in less than six months.“It felt like there was a cloud around us, so we aimed to make something uplifting. I think that’s why there’s a lot of fantasy stuff on the record. I tried to take it away from day to day life, and make it more about the abstract, about art. It sounds odd, but really, this is an optimistic record”, said Moreno.

These days, the members of Deftones are far more unified, unlike their “dark days” back in 2000-2003. Keyboardist Frank Delgado said, “A lot of that was trumped up, but we’ve definitely had some heavy times. Still one of the best things about this band is that we just don’t give up. As dysfunctional as it can be, we still make it work. And I really don’t know what the press thinks of us now, but I like that. There should be some mysticism there. Maybe they should think we’re off our rocker”.

With that being said, you will want to watch this epic band perform live.

The Hottest Book Launch in Town

    November 22, 2010

There is hope for single men and No Girlfriends Since Birth. And RJ Ledesma has the answer.

After “Lies My Yaya Should Have Told Me: An Imaginary Guide to Whine and Women: and “I Do Or I Die: An Imaginary Guide to Getting Married and Other Man-Made Disasters”, this magazine editor, newspaper columnist, events host, struggling actor and manservant to his wife and baby daughter inflicts tertiary damage to the local literary scene with the launch of his third book, “Is It Hot In Here Or Is It Me? RJ Ledesma’s Imaginary Guide to Flirting, Body Language and Pick-Up Artists” by Anvil Publishing.

In his latest compilation of humorous essays, RJ shares the five universal steps of flirting that women to ensnare clueless men, improves literacy standards by schooling men in female body language, and reveals the secrets used by professional pick-up artists to make women do things that they will regret in the morning. And he does all this with the help of Dirty Old Men, No Girlfriends Since Birth, his poor yaya and Palanca Award Hall-of-Famer Krip Yuson who wrote in the book’s foreword (with much duress).

Krip Yuson captures the possessed spirit of the book when he says, ‘From savvy insights on the “inner D.O.M.” that apparently stems from intimate knowledge of his own inimitable persona, to sage advisories offered “DITs” or “D.O.M.s in training,” we have to hand it to this aristocrat of emotional effusions…In a pheromone-dictated parallel universe, we would do well to arm ourselves with all the knowledge on Biblical knowing found in these pages. Thus should our evenings, midnights and wee hours turn into models of satiety, if not frustration. Either way, we can thank the author, and “touch him in the moaning.”’

Join RJ Ledesma for the book launch and signing on November 25 (Thursday) 6:00pm at Powerbooks, Greenbelt 4. Every book purchased will go a long way in helping single men find dates. “Is It Hot In Here Or Is It Me? RJ Ledesma’s Imaginary Guide to Flirting, Body Language and Pick-Up Artists” is available in National Bookstore and Powerbooks nationwide. For more information, please visit www.rjledesma.net.
