The perfect man for the job!

    April 18, 2011

UNO rocks out this month with our very special Music Issue, featuring one of the country’s biggest rock stars on the cover: Nathan Azarcon. (This is, by the way, only the second time in the magazine’s nine-year history that we’ve put a solo male on the cover; the very first one was Manny Pangilinan.)

Inside, we combine two of our biggest passions — women and music — in a massive section featuring artists established and up-and-coming, including Lea Salonga, Barbie Almalbis, Celeste Legaspi, Sarah Gaugler, Vernie Varga, Katwo Librando, Kitchie Nadal, Myrene Academia, Armi Millare and many more. Also, editors Erwin Romulo and Luis Katigbak show off their picks for the best local music of the 2000s so far.

Those of you who have daydreamed of dating the hotter-than-hot Jacq Yu (or at least gazing at some incredible pix of her): we’ve got you covered. Also, the lovely Denise Montecillo joins us as we stuff our faces at Mercato Centrale. Jinno Rufino meets the NBA All-Stars, Eric Melendez talks about how we acquire music today, Lorely Trinidad tells us about growing up Fil-Am in a hip-hop world, Caliph8 shows us how to dig for rare vinyl, and Tricia Gosingtian says hello to New York City. That’s not all of course, but you’ll have to grab the issue to find out more.

(UNO’s Music special should be played at high volume, preferably in a residential area.)

Directed and cut by Jason Tan

    Produced by Erwin Romulo

Cruise the city with the power of the all new CBR 150R

    January 20, 2011

This bike will make you awesome.

Rising fuel costs, worsening traffic, increasing PUV fare rates, prohibitive parking expenses…what’s next?

No wonder that the volume of motorcycles in the country has almost tripled in the past years, an indication that there is no other way for the two-wheelers but to multiply.

And with the introduction of more exciting, sporty, fuel efficient and environment-friendly motorcycles in the local market, what else can the motorbike enthusiasts ask for?

Adding spice to the already hot and tight motorcycle competition is Honda Philippines’ new breed, the Honda CBR 150R, that stands out on its super sports design and styling almost identical with the world motorbike champion Honda CBR 1000RR.

In pioneering on the light sports motorbike design such as the new Honda CBR 150R, motorcycle riders will now be hesitant in infusing modification units such as altering handle bars, changing exhaust pipes, installing wider tires, upgrading brake systems, etc. that compromise riding safety. In the new Honda CBR 150R, the sporty characteristics that a rider needs are “all in.”

Starting with its attractive full body cowling, the Honda CBR 150R can easily be mistaken as the CBR 1000RR minus the Repsol decals if viewed from a distance from all angles. The sleek designed rider and tandem seat and bold tank shape are identical to its Big Brother CBR 1000RR.

The combination headlights and aerodynamic wind deflector matches with sporty mirrors give the impression that this machine is ready to race.

From its rear, there is the chic tail and signal lights mounted on fender that is endowed with separate hand grips for easy lifting on tight areas. Near the chain drive is another stunning feature, a compact sized exhaust pipe that was once accorded only to premium sport bikes with big engines.
Along with the sporty handle bars, the Honda CBR 150R boasts of its new digital meter composed of illuminated LCD dial featuring fuel level, odometer, digital clock and an equally important temperature gauge.

Squeezing in traffic is no problem. The Honda CBR’s 150cc, DOHC-engine is acclimatized for tropical countries like the Philippines since it is equipped with a liquid cooled system with an auxiliary fan against overheating.

Its fuel management system is endowed with a high tech PGM-FI (fuel injection) system to ensure good combustion, efficient fuel distribution and environment-friendly Euro-3 emission compliance. Its fuel efficiency provide 63 kilometers- to-a-litre consumption at 50kph with its 13 litre six-speed engine.

Zeroing in on the Honda CBR 150R’s stopping power, every rider will experience a different feel of riding confidence with its double cylinder front disc brake and equally dependable rear disc brake.

Cornering with the CBR 150R is always an exhilarating experience as the uniquely-crafted black pentagon frame that is pampered with a mono shock rear suspension offer better stability and turning control. Adding to the rider’s sense of security is the improved road grip provided by the bigger and larger front and rear tubeless rubbers mounted on sporty alloy wheels.

Another unique feature of the Honda CBR 150R is its double security lock key shutter as an effective deterrent against bike thieves.

Honda Philippines, Inc. is determined to deliver attractive mobility that excels in environmental performance and safety and which will enrich the lives of our customers while fulfilling their dreams and providing them with joy.

CBR150R is now available to all Honda Motorcycle 3S dealers nationwide with a suggested retail price of P 150,000.00.

SPLINTR.COM Presents Deftones Live in Manila!

    December 13, 2010

Never your average hard rock band

Deemed as one of the biggest musical acts of this generation, DEFTONES is more than just your average rock band. With millions of albums sold and jam-packed concerts all over the world, this band has embedded its name in rock history. Manila, we present to you – DEFTONES: Diamond Eyes Tour!

    Deftones

What started out as a five-piece band from Sacramento, experimenting with The Smiths, Pantera, The Cure and The Smurfs, Deftones now brings you one of the most compelling records of their career. With 23 years of non-stop rocking under their belt, Deftones has managed to stay on top amidst the constantly changing musical styles of the generation.“There are so many emotions that music can give you, and if you explore all sides of those, it can be really amazing”, says frontman Chino Moreno. “Like sadness — it can be really lovely, or beautiful, or wide open, or coarse. We connect with different emotions because we listen to everything from dumb music or something by Brian Eno. Then when we play, it’s not a real conscious thing, but the emotion builds and it takes us in a lot of different ways. I think that’s what music is supposed to do”.

Guitarist Stephen Carpenter and Moreno are the dynamic duo behind Deftones’ records. “What makes us work?” asks Carpenter. “Chino will give you the exact opposite answer that I do. That’s the way it is with us, we contradict each other constantly but it’s also what makes our music what it is, intense and different”.The band has played with punk rockers, L7, and toured with Metallica. Lacking genre classification, they appeal to a wide range of music lovers. “We’re not a party band, but we’re not a dark rock band”, says Moreno. “We’re not the most wildly artistic band, but we’re not light and fluffy. It’s hard to put us in one place. I don’t blame people when they try to do it, because I can’t even pin it myself. But really, does it matter?”

The sixth album, Diamond Eyes, was recorded after their best friend and bassist Chi Cheng sustained a debilitating brain injury from a car accident in November of 2008. Treating the incident as inspiration rather than a hindrance, the band decided to make the sixth album more spontaneous and optimistic. With the help of former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega and producer Nick Raskulinecz (of Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, and Rush fame), Diamond Eyes was completed in less than six months.“It felt like there was a cloud around us, so we aimed to make something uplifting. I think that’s why there’s a lot of fantasy stuff on the record. I tried to take it away from day to day life, and make it more about the abstract, about art. It sounds odd, but really, this is an optimistic record”, said Moreno.

These days, the members of Deftones are far more unified, unlike their “dark days” back in 2000-2003. Keyboardist Frank Delgado said, “A lot of that was trumped up, but we’ve definitely had some heavy times. Still one of the best things about this band is that we just don’t give up. As dysfunctional as it can be, we still make it work. And I really don’t know what the press thinks of us now, but I like that. There should be some mysticism there. Maybe they should think we’re off our rocker”.

With that being said, you will want to watch this epic band perform live.

    John Lennon ”Gimme Some Truth”

    October 8, 2010

Polyeast Records, the Philippines’ licensee of EMI Music International, proudly announces the release of eight of John Lennon’s classic solo albums and other standout recordings that have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for a global catalogue initiative commemorating the music legend’s 70th birthday, which falls on October 9. Overseen by Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth” campaign highlights the worldwide release of eight digitally remastered studio albums and several newly-compiled titles.

In the Philippines, Polyeast Records joins this historical campaign for a music legend and releases Lennon’s classic solo albums and other standout recordings that have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for the first time. “Double Fantasy,” 1980’s GRAMMY Award winner for Album of the Year, will be presented with a newly remixed ‘Stripped Down’ (2010) version produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas, Lennon’s original co-producers for the album. “Some Time In New York City” (1972) has been restored to include the six ‘Live Jam’ recordings featured on the original album.

Power To The People: The Hits gathers 15 of Lennon’s most popular songs, and will be available as a 15-track single-disc and will be packaged in digisleeves with booklets including a new liner note essay by Du Noyer. The deluxe 11CD and digital “John Lennon Signature Box” includes 13 previously unreleased home recordings, and Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, and Julian Lennon have each written personal essays for the lavish collection. The cover art for the new titles includes original drawings by Sean Lennon for “Double Fantasy Stripped Down” (2010) while the cover of 1974’s /Walls and Bridges/ is restored to its original artwork.

The other albums to be reissued are: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970); Imagine (1971); Mind Games (1973); Walls and Bridges (1974); Rock ‘n’ Roll (1975); and Milk and Honey (1984).

YOKO ONO said: “In this very special year, which would have seen my husband and life partner John reach the age of 70, I hope that this remastering / reissue programme will help bring his incredible music to a whole new audience. By remastering 121 tracks spanning his solo career, I hope also that those who are already familiar with John’s work will find renewed inspiration from his incredible gifts as a songwriter, musician and vocalist and from his power as a commentator on the human condition. His lyrics are as relevant today as they were when they were first written and I can think of no more apposite title for this campaign than those simple yet direct words ‘Gimme Some Truth’.”

One of the world’s most celebrated songwriters and performers of all time, John Lennon was killed at the age of 40 on December 8, 1980.  Lennon has been posthumously honoured with a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award and two special BRIT Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him in the Top 5 of the magazine’s “100 Greatest Singers Of All Time” list.

In celebration of his 70th birthday on 9 October, 2010, John Lennon’s life and music will be specially feted with a variety of commemorative releases and events around the world. Celebrate a musical history on October 9, 2010 as The Poppe Shoppe! Music Series: “A Call to Mind” showcases talents of Indie bands and visual artists at the ground floor lobby of Ayala Museum featuring “Watching the Wheels- A Birthday Tribute to John Lennon.”

STEREO 2 by Juan Caguicla and Christina Dy

Silverlens Gallery celebrates MANILART 10 with STEREO 2 by Juan Caguicla and Christina Dy, July 27-31, 2010 at Silverlens

STEREO by Juan Caguicla and Christina Dy continues on July 27 at Silverlens Gallery. As a special extension of the Silverlens Show at MANILART 10 , the Philippines’ second international contemporary art fair to be held from July 30 to August 01 at the SMX Convention Center, Caguicla and Dy join Frankie Callaghan, Leslie de Chavez, Mariano Ching, Chati Coronel, Christina Dy, Wawi Navarozza, Gina Osterloh, Hanna Pettyjohn and Rachel Rillo.

Showcasing the second part of two series marrying Caguicla’s edgy photography and Dy’s large-scale charcoal drawings, Caguicla and Dy present only one image, albeit a very strong one. As in January’s STEREO 1, the two choose their body as their subjects to produce an altogether new and grotesque image. It is indeed “stereoscopic”, as described by mutual friend Raymond De Veyra, the source of the show’s name.

In this show, called STEREO 2, Caguicla and Dy go much further with what they bare and where they connect. And by also going much bigger in scale, STEREO 2 is meant to make an impact. There is a thrill in seeing it for the first time.

Complementing STEREO 2 is their collaboration for Brian Tenorio and Emi Jorge’s design exhibition, Tenorio/Jorge on Fifth Avenue, which ran from April 29 through May 22 in The Philippine Center in New York. “As a backdrop to Tenorio and Jorge’s designs are two of the most-photographed faces in the Philippines, Piolo Pascual and Angel Aquino – both excellent specimens of quintessential Filipino beauty.”* Caguicla photographed Pascual and Aquino while Dy drew on the decorative details. To highlight what is ‘Pinoy’, they thought to put together Pascual and Aquino’s iconic beauty and Catholic iconography.

As in STEREO 2, they lay out imagery that is familiar, full of detail and with perhaps a milieu of metaphors to be found. But the idea behind Caguicla and Dy’s work is not to prescribe, but rather to look with new eyes.

STEREO 2 is shown alongside Beautiful Inside My Head Forever with Martha Atienza, Bea Camacho, Sam Kiyoumarsi and Pow Martinez, curated by Norberto Roldan at SLab; and Sure Sure, Happy Happy, Picture Picture by Maria Jeona at 20SQUARE.

MANILART10 will be at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City from July 30 to August 01,2010. For more information and tickets, please visit www.manilart.com
