TATTOO, the no. 1 most preferred broadband, unleashed its weapons for greatness in a daring resistance campaign against uniformity, mediocrity and limitations.

The goal is to break barriers and the battle cry is to resist. Thus, the Ayala Museum was transformed into a canvass as Tattoo brought to life the different forms of resistance. This multi-sensorial display featured four fascinating artworks that bore testament to the resistance movement with each artwork meticulously crafted by select individuals renowned in their field and known for their extraordinary vision.

Interpreting Resisting Uniformity through fashion is award winning fashion designer and milliner Mich Dulce with an installation that featured her latest creations. Resisting Mediocrity through multimedia arts is graphic design house Team Manila which presented their design that stood as a mixture of local pop culture. Resisting Limitations through form is the sculptural artwork of Leeroy New that carries his trademark of pushing the boundaries of imagination while Paul Zialcita displayed Resistance through sound as he performed his beats through mix of traditional and unconventional instruments creating a distinct rhythm. “This evening is very important for Tattoo as we bravely lead and share with you this revolution,” says Dong Ronquillo, Tattoo Head of Nomadic Broadband Business. “What is resistance exactly? It is not settling for anything less and always pushing the limits to achieve greatness. This is what Tattoo stands for and this year we continue on living without limits”.

Special performances that translated the Resistance movement through reel to real experiences were interpreted by model Jasmine Maierhofer, the Hot Legs dancers and live poetry reading by Niña Terol and Paul Zialcita. Tattoo’s new faces of greatness were also unveiled: the Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire, Master Model Georgina Wilson and Chicosci lead vocalist and Rock Rebel Miggy Chavez. Guests were given a chance to get up close and personal with Georgina and Miggy as they shared the significance of this revolution and how they resist and break the norms to become great in their chosen field.

Globe President and Chief Executive Officer Ernest Cu and the trade partners of Globe graced the event hosted by Sarah Meier – Albano. Tattoo’s brand ambassadors race car champion Marlon Stockinger, cyber superstar Saab Magalona and Ford Supermodel of the World 2010 Danica Magpantay and art diva Sarah Gaugler were also at the event to show their support to the new campaign. Other celebrities spotted during the Tattoo Resistance launch were Raymond Gutierrez, Divine Lee, Angeli Pangilinan, Pia Magalona, Frank Magalona, RJ Ledesma, Borgy Manotoc, Rovilson Fernandez, Rhett Eala and JR Isaac.

Tattoo continues to push the boundaries in connectivity, delivering unparalleled service with 4G, better devices, wider reach and faster speeds at unbeatable value.

Resist against the mediocre offers of other brands with the Tattoo 4G Flash at P1245 which runs at a speed of up to 7.2 mbps with free 120 hours valid for 5 days plus free surfing on Facebook for 30 days.

Resisting Limitations, Tattoo subscribers may now enjoy ultimate non-stop surfing for 3 days with SUPERSURF for only P120, avoiding the hassle of daily registration.

Resisting uniformity, the New Tattoo Postpaid Personalized Plan at a baseplan of only P999 a month comes with unlimited surfing at a speed of up to 7.2 mbps.

It’s time to resist. Join the resistance and choose your weapon. Visit www.tattoo.globe.com.ph.

For the first time in Philippine cinema, a full-length documentary film on the struggling sugar industry of the island of Negros and how a piece of crystallized grain could affect a whole island of 2.7 million people!

At the turn of the 20th century, Negrense “hacienderos” (sugarcane land owners) were the richest and their farm workers the highest paid in the country.
But in a span of a century, the Negros sugar industry plunged from its proverbial pedestal into its inglorious present state.

Why is the industry in peril? Is it, indeed, a flailing sunset industry?

Filmmaker J Abello, a former sugarcane farm manager, offers a glimpse of the island’s turbulent history through dramatic and controversial video: lavish parties of Negros sugar barons, candid interviews with hacienderos, never before seen footage of Negros island…and more.

“Pureza: The Story of Negros Sugar” traces the history of the Negros sugar industry as it faces strife and discord in the advent of the 21st century.

By Denise Mallabo

Photos by Magic Liwanag

The last time pop star Katy Perry was here in Manila three years ago, she played alongside Journey’s Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon and the band MAE at a benefit concert for the survivors of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. She was warmly accepted by her adoring fans– mostly teens during that time– so it was no surprise she was here again just recently for a bigger and grander concert. Manila was the last stop of her California Dreams 2012 Tour. The show started at 8pm with Los Angeles-based DJ Skeet Skeet pumping up the crowd with an hour-long mix. About another hour later, the lights dimmed and a video narrative was played. A few minutes after that, Katy, sporting a dress adorned with swirl candy-looking contraptions, kicked things off with her song “Teenage Dream.” Her stage looked like candy land had just been transported there, and her dancers, wearing equally colorful costumes, were really good. She sang all of her hits, from “Waking up in Vegas” to “Hot n’ Cold,” “Peacock” to “I Kissed a Girl” when she pulled model Ivan Dorschner onstage and planted a kiss on his cheek, which he also gave her in return. The laser light show as she sang “E.T.” was really impressive. A favorite moment of mine was when she sang a toned-down version of “The One That Got Away.” Here her voice was so controlled I found it very moving. Katy ended the concert with “California Girls” and blasted everyone with water and bubbles. The audience bounced beach balls around and everybody was showered with confetti. She definitely saved the best country for the last leg of her tour.

UNO briefly caught up with former Senator Richard “Dick” Gordon, who’s been busying himself with the Philippine Red Cross, to discuss the group’s efforts in aiding the victims of typhoon Sendong. Known for supporting the men’s senior basketball team of ADMU (his alma mater) especially during the UAAP basketball season, Gordon confessed his lack of knowledge of football during the press conference, but expressed his openness to checking out the country’s other favorite sport, especially if it meant raising funds to help out the survivors of the typhoon, which hit major parts of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Red Cross was one of the organizations behind the recently-held charity match between Azkals-UFL Alyansa and FC Internacional de Madrid last January 7 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, wherein the Spanish club won 3-1 against the host. At the half, the generous team from Spain formally donated 10,000 euros, plus signed jerseys to be auctioned off all for charity. Gordon was also present to accept the gifts.

Below are photos (taken by Juan Benjamin Janeo) from the press conference and match, and exclusive interview with the Philippine Red Cross chairman:

How have you been since after the Senate?
I’ve been working on the Red Cross. I have a radio program and a TV program on TV5. I also sit on the board of several corporations, but my focus has been mainly on the Red Cross–[we're] humanitarian, we’re non-profit. I’m a volunteer; I don’t get paid any money. And I enjoy [working with] talented people [putting] all our efforts into the Red Cross as volunteers. And this is a definite example. The request is starting to build now–1000 homes right away in Cagayan De Oro. And with the other 2 hectares again we have another 300, and if we get the land in Iligan, we get another 1000 homes as well. And we’re ahead of giving the non-food items and food items, and the idea here is to provide not just survival but dignity and recovery.

How are we with our target? Are we far from it?
No, we’re alright except that we want them to go from dependency mode into recovery right away. We want them to get their minds off the idea that there will always be handouts and that they need all hands to carry the load. So I think that we’ll be able to do that once the housing starts. Beneficiaries will be the ones to build the house. So we have a thousand tents that will be placed right away so that they can get out of the schools and a family of six can stay in a tent; even a family of seven. And [with] a thousand tents across the land–they can just build their homes and we’ll provide them with the materials and we’ll provide them with the equipment: saws, hammers, everything. At the same time they’re building on it, we’re giving them food so that they won’t be stressed [out] looking for food. And if there’s more money later on, we’ll provide them with Php7,000 as startup capital.

How’s the experience going to the site and seeing everything first-hand?
Oh, first day was really a shocker. You have a lot of people who not only lost their homes, but lost families. They’ve not gotten closure because there have been missing people in their families. And there’s no future because they’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their past, they’ve lost their present and it’s a very uncertain future, so it’s a very difficult proposition. That’s why we’re exerting all our efforts to help them.

How’s the group been working with our government for this cause?
Oh, we do that. We need a lot more coordination because everybody was doing it in Christmas, so there’s probably an oversupply of food there. But the request goes for the “over-served” and the “under-served.” So the under-served, we take care of as well.

What’s next for you? Are you planning to go back into politics?
There’s always that option. In the Senate, perhaps, I don’t know. I’ve not been offered any of the Cabinet [positions]. They were making noises, but the decision is theirs, it’s not my decision to make.

Pasay City, Metro Manila – On Tuesday, December 20, the Kaholeros, as the official booster squad of the Philippine National Football Teams, hosted the first Azkals Christmas Party at the SMDC Grand Showroom. The party, which was also graced by the coaching staff of the Azkals, the players of the Under-23 National Football Team (Junior Azkals), the players and coaching staff of the Women’s National Football Team (Malditas) and the officials of the Philippine Football Federation, was primarily organized so that the team may spend some time with fans outside of the football scene.

Kia Motors, the event’s main sponsor, gave commendation in the form of four brand new Kia Picantos to Azkals veterans Ian Araneta, Anton Del Rosario, Roel Gener and Ed Sacapano for their contribution to the team and to Philippine football in general.

The Kaholeros also gave out awards, which results were arrived at via online voting of its members. The winners were Nate Burkey and Lexton Moy (Social Service Award), Alexander “Aly” Borromeo (Fair Play Award), Stephan Schrock (Goal of the Year), Neil Etheridge (Save of the Year), and Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong (Congeniality Award and Player of the Year).

In the midst of the celebration, the Kaholeros did not ignore the tragedy brought about by tropical storm Sendong; so they brought old clothes and blankets to be donated to the victims. LBC Express graciously picked them up from the venue.

Team Manager Dan Palami, not forgetting the crucial role they play in the success of the team on and off the field, raffled off a few prizes exclusively for the members of the Kaholeros, to the surprise and utter delight of all attendees. He capped the night off with a message of thanks to everyone who has supported and has been instrumental in the promotion of the game in the country. He promised that 2012 will be a bigger year for football in the Philippines.

Secret Fresh’s year opener for 2012 is an exhibit of poster art created by Manila’s top and up and coming graphic designers and artists who also venture into illustration. The show opening this January 8 Sunday at 6 PM is entitled AGIT POP! Post-Its To The Post Apocalypse and showcases their poster designs which imagines them as message boards to a future world promising utopic visions in the aftermath of an imagined anticipated holocaust as prodded by the much Mayan calendar footnoting of the year 2012. Reversing the doomdsday prophesies, the posters present instead a possibility beyond such eventuality, speculating on the premise of a promised renewed world or the unfulfillment of such in a rather dystopia.

The line up of artists for this show is composed of JP Cuison, Dina Gadia, D.O.T. , Folk Superlative, Electrolychee, 27 + 20, Dee Grayson, AJ Dimarucot, Paulo Reyes, Russell Vergara, Wes Valenzuela, Mimi Tecson, A.lien, Dang Sering, Jackie Millonado and Jay Mitra.

The show runs from January 8 Sunday at 6PM at the Secret Fresh Gallery, Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, Greenhills, San Juan, and ends on the 27th of the month.

Stay tuned for more information about Secret Fresh’s events this January.

Dorothy said it best. There’s no place like home. No farmhouses on this list though. What we do have is a list of fabulous, mind blowing, out of this world abodes whose moving staircases, time travel abilities, poles you slide down off of, and over all coolness that make you wonder why the people who live in them bother to go out at all.

HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY

Harry Potter’s alma mater cannot be found by non-magical eyes. The castle that houses the school stands near the Black Lake and the Forbidden Forest. The lake is populated by merfolk, grindylows and a giant squid. How a squid manages to,live in fresh water is a magical thing in itself. The forest holds many dangerous things including centaurs, giant spiders, unicorns, and the occasional student. The rooms in Hogwarts never stay in the same place, and the staircases tend to move around, which one imagines results in a lot of students late for class and doors being opened to surprised students in compromising positions. Ah, youth. But yes, if you lived in a school where you had to learn stuff like Transfiguration (changing one object into the shape of another), Charms (incantations used to bewitched people, like that cute guy who plays quidditch without his shirt on), and Defense Against the Dark Arts (which sounds cool, period), Hogwarts is the place to be, never mind that 50% of what goes on inside it might very well kill you.

BATCAVE

When asked to name the most awesome abode they can think of, the most people will immediately say the Bat Cave. After all, it’s a secret room under an eligible bachelor’s mansion (already a pretty cool thing in itself) that houses a computer so powerful that calling it a superercomputer is akin to patting it on the head and telling it to run along and play with the other kids. The Bat Cave also houses, among other things, a crime lab, a gym, a teleporter, parking spaces for various vehicles, the most famous of which is the Batmobile and incidentally, a colony of bats. With a high tech setup as this, one wonders why the caped crusader bothers to venture out at all.

TARDIS

The TARDIS (which stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) is Dr. Who’s spaceship/time machine that is currently stuck in the shape of a blue police box. The TARDIS is bigger on the inside than its exteriors suggests, and can take its occupants to any point in time or space, from Shakespeare’s England to when the Earth gets swallowed by the sun. But probably as important as its time and space bending abilities is that its small size makes it very easy to park, and its chameleon circuit means that it blends into its surroundings, thereby avoiding any unwanted tickets.

THE FIREHOUSE

What’s not to love about the Ghostbusters’s HQ? What is fondly called a “big waste of space” sounds like a fun place to hold office in. You get to hang out around what used to be real working New york firehouse. When a job gets called in, you slide down a long pole and run to your car, and after the job is done, you head downstairs and deposit whatever spirit you’ve caught into the Containment Unit, a mini universe in itself, one entirely populated by ghosts. The only drawback to living in the Firehouse s that you have to share a room with everyone else, something that must be prove awkward on date nights.

BENDER’S CLOSET

Futurama’s drunken, debauched robot bender lives in an apartment that is roughly the size of an elevator, and a small one at that. The only other room in his apartment, is in his closet, which he sublets to his best friend, Philip J. Fry. The closet is about the size of, well a very big apartment, and might very well be the ultimate 31st century bachelor pad. it’s got a huge space, all the technological comforts of the 31st century (except a robot to clean up the mess because that would be beneath them), all attained on the salary of a delivery boy. What do you say to that, Mr. Inflation?

DEXTER’S LABORATORY

It’s every ten year-old inventor lad’s dream: to have a fully functional laboratory behind his room’s bookcase. Anything goes in the lab. Giant robots can be built, worlds can be saved with cheese omelets, and monkeys can be experimented on. The only problem is the the world’s greatest lab comes with the world’s greatest annoyance in the form of an older sibling who likes bunnies, unicorns and getting around the lab’s superior defenses. It just goes to show that even the world’s smartest ten year old can’t think everything, and that even the most high tech defenses fail in the wake of the color pink.

FLYING HOUSE

If you were conscious in the ’80s, you would not have missed The Flying House, a time machine in the shape of, well, a house, manned by the aptly named Professor Humphrey Bumble and his robot assistant SIR. Friends Justin Casey and Angela Roberts and her bother Corky stumble on the house when caught in a storm while playing hide and seek in the forest and a lightning strike causes them to go back in time to various parts of the Old Testament. Aside from being a time machine, the house never seems to run out of food, never seems to have a bad plumbing, and enables the kids to meet Jesus on an almost daily basis. Of course, the cartoon series stems from a simpler time, when it was all right for kids to play hide and seek in the woods, seek shelter in lonesome dwelling places and trust strange middle-aged men, even if said men did have cool robots.

EMERALD CITY

You didn’t think I’d make a Wizard of Oz reference and not mention the Emerald City, did you? An overdose of the color green aside (though some of the books don’t describe the city as actually being green , though it does have a preoccupation with the color), wouldn’t it be lovely to control a whole metropolis, the capital of the land and all the people who live in and around it. via little box of controls hidden inside the castle that make you seem bigger and scarier than you really are? So yeah, the Emerald City gets a mention as an awesome place to live in, but only if you’re the Wizard.

THE DREAMING

Sandman fans and Neil Gaiman diehards know the The Dreaming as the place where Morphans, the dream king, lives. It is populated by all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures such as a talking raven and a scarecrow with a pumpkin for a head, and contains all sorts of mysterious places such as the House of Mystery and the House of Secrets, where brothers Cain and Abel live, respectively. In the middle of The Dreaming lies Morpheus’ castle, which contains a library that houses all the books that people have ever dreamed of writing, all of which can be read regardless of what language one speaks, or whether one can read at all. If you’re an explorer, you’ll never lack for places to see and things to do in The Dreaming. If you’re a reader, you can lock yourself in the library and spend eternity in book-filled bliss.

DANNY THE STREET

Doom Patrol’s Danny the Street is a home for restless wanderers, people who are too lonely or strange to live outside their own heads. As a street, Danny can teleport anywhere without seeming out of place geographically. He’s got a host of other talents, including the ability to communicate via signs and urban affectations. A street where the weary find rest, and one that moves around and talk to you to boot. Sounds like an awesome neighborhood to me.

UNO and the ever-cool Kat Alano enjoy a laid-back yet chic dining experience at Borough, Manila’s newest all day all night establishment

Amidst the multitude of restaurants and cafés popping up in and around Metro Manila, 24-hour establishment Borough stands out: inspired by upscale New York appetites, it serves comfort food any hour of the day, ready to feed the wandering and whimsical palate of today’s taste tourists.

For business partners Patrick Santos, Dodjie Violago, Albert Besa, and Chef Cuit Kaufman (also Borough’s in-house chef ), what makes Borough unique—apart from its 24-hour service—is the variety of comfort food on their menu, coupled with the easy background music and welcoming interiors.

To our delight, Kat Alano, the former VJ (turned commercial model-turned TV host-turned VJ again) and now co-host of KC Montero on FM station Wave 89.1’s “The KC Show,” agreed to sample some of the dishes at Borough with us one afternoon.

Kat shared what’s been keeping her busy other than granting radio requests on a daily basis. “[I’m] working on a movie right now, and getting into producing and working on my music career!” (Her songs sound really nice, by the way—check out some of her music on SNRGmusic. com). This self-proclaimed food lover is certainly one of our favorite dining companions for RAVENOUS to date.

Would you consider yourself a foodie?

I’m definitely a foodie. I love to cook and enjoy experimenting with different flavors and ingredients!

Had you heard of Borough before today?

Actually, funnily enough, I was here with one of the owners the week before you asked me to do this!

What do you think of the restaurant scene in the Metro today?

I think there are such a wide variety of restaurants nowadays, which is great for people like me because I love to try different types of food all the time.

What do you usually like to eat?

I grew up in Hong Kong so I love Chinese food. Next to that, I enjoy Japanese, Italian, Greek, Mediterranean, and American food, and all kinds of seafood!

What’s your favorite dish?

I love steamed crab. It’s simple, but it’s my favorite.

What was your first impression of Borough?

The name is very unique, and it definitely gives it an international feel. I love the decor, especially the roses on the chairs—it reminds me of houses back in the UK.

We ate Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (P260), Sole Amandine (P420), and Mom’s Milk and Cookies (P190). Which of the dishes was the best?

All of them were great. I’m a big melted cheese fan, so the grilled cheese was on point—super filled with a great combination of cheeses. The fish was perfectly cooked—so soft, and it was well complemented by the capers and beans, but I have to say the Milk and Cookies were AWESOME. I don’t usually eat cookies with milk (very Santa Claus), but the warm cookies dunked in the contrasting cold milk were superb. It makes for a perfect dessert!

Anything you weren’t so excited about?

None!

Any other noteworthy dish?

The Red Velvet cake is also a must-try.

Overall, how did you find the whole Borough dining experience?

Borough is nice because it isn’t overdone. It’s simple and it has a good space where you can just hang out, have some drinks, or a nice meal with friends. The area is set up well so even if there are a lot of people, you don’t feel crowded. Plus, it’s open all the time!

Are they worth the price?

Definitely. There are a lot of restaurants that are overpriced, whose food doesn’t meet the mark, but Borough is reasonably priced, and their food is delightfully good.

Any plans of going back?

Of course, and I think I could bring any one of my friends here. I know they would all enjoy it.

Borough

located at the G/F of The Podium Mall (beside Gloria Maris), Ortigas Center, Pasig City. It is open 24 hours daily.
