The Philippine Book Launch of A Moment in the Sun by John Sayles

    June 17, 2011

A Moment in the Sun by John Sayles

John Sayles is an Irish-American author, independent film director, and screenwriter. He has received numerous awards for his works in film and literature. He has authored a number of novels, including The Anarchist’s Convention and Other Stories, Dillinger in Hollywood: New and Selected Short Stories, Los Gusanos, among others. His first published work, a short story on how a trucker became the stuff of American road legend, entitled “I-80 Nebraska,” won an O. Henry Award in 1975. His book Union Dues, which centers on a 17-year-old runaway and his adventures—and misadventures—in the turbulent 60s, was nominated for both a National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977.

Sayles was also awarded the John Steinbeck Award, the John Cassavetes Award, the Ian McLellan Hunter Award, and most notably, Lifetime Achievement by the prestigious Writer’s Guild of America.

This June 25, 2011, the Philippine launch of Sayles’s latest literary endeavor A Moment in the Sun will be held in the Atrium G/L of Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street at 3:00 p.m.

Sayles was recently in the Philippines to shoot and promote his film Amigo, which starred local veteran actors Joel Torre, Bembol Roco, Rio Locsin, and Ronnie Lazaro. During his visit in February 2011 he also gave a talk on the Filipino-American war and premiered his film in various locations around the Philippines, Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street included. His seeming fascination for this historical period is also made evident in his new book A Moment in the Sun, published by McSweeney’s.

Much like his other works, A Moment in the Sun is a sprawling affair; touching on various landmark events in history such as the discovery of gold in the Yukon to racism in North Carolina to the explosion of a battleship in a Cuban harbor—which would lead to the war with Cuba and Spain to America’s eventual colonization of the Philippines. Richly detailed and ambitious—and ultimately successful—in scope, the book’s characters play out the specific points in history that they represent to the hilt.

    How to Lie

    May 7, 2010

“If a lie is going to be good and if it’s going to be told well, it has to be true on a bigger level…all of fiction is a lie, but if you do it well, it’s a lie that tells you something big, and real, and very important about the world, and tells it in a way that will pay the rent, which I think is the most important part.

And everybody—people lie about themselves. Very often, the lies actually tell you much more about them than the true things they say ever would.”Neil Gaiman (as told to Ramon de Veyra)

    The James Jean Raffle

    November 2, 2009

“Like Wolverine, James Jean is the best at what he does. Unlike Wolverine, James Jean doesn’t kill people with razors that pop out of his hand. You might not know James Jean by name but you’ve seen his work. His art’s all over the place. It’s in galleries, on Prada bags, album covers, in magazines and on the covers of DC comics. Tom Herpich and Kenichi Hoshine are simlarly talented and definitely blow minds with their intense talent and vision but James Jean is the king. James’ drawings have sophistication, power and delicacy beyond what most drawers can muster.”

    – Nick Gazin, VICELAND

James Jean is coming to Manila and we’re all excited. We were so excited that we called up Fully Booked and asked them to do this raffle with us. So we’re now running this contest, and Fully Booked is giving away these great prizes. Honestly, we want them for ourselves. If you want a shot at this, all you need to do is leave a comment below answering the question “Which is your favorite James Jean masterpiece and why?” You can leave as many answers as you want, but note that the top 10 entries will be decided upon by us.

The full mechanics of the contest can be found below:

The following prizes are up for grabs, courtesy of Fully Booked:

One (1) copy of Process Recess volume 3
One (1) copy of Fables Volume 1 Deluxe Edition
One (1) copy of XOXO Postcard Book

Contest runs from November 4 – November 18. Deadline for entries is November 18, 11:59 PM. Editors of UNO will submit a shortlist of contestants to Fully Booked. Fully Booked will then determine the 3 lucky winners.

Winners will be announced on November 20.

Prizes can be claimed at Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street. Prizes not claimed after 30 days will be forfeited in favor of Fully Booked.

A Special Screening of Arnold Arre’s Chapter One

    August 2, 2009

We were lucky to have Arnold and Cynthia Arre over for our little get together with our contributors and blogger friends. Some of us had seen his short film a few weeks ago, and since a good number of the staff follow his works, we invited him to show off his new venture into the film medium to our guests.

A gift from his wife Cynthia was all he needed — his first camera. Armed with a small budget, duct tape and PVC pipes, he ventured on to create Chapter One.

Among other talent friends of Arnold, the film stars our very own Yvette Tan, Luis Katigbak and Erwin Romulo. Gang Badoy is also in it. You should see it.

An Evening with our Contributors and Internet Friends

    August 1, 2009

If you could strip a magazine naked, spread it wide open and linger onto the sensual aroma of its paper stock, you’d probably, at one point, realize that it really takes a whole bunch of crazy people (like us) to revamp a magazine — a men’s magazine specifically in this highly competitive and discerning market.

So apart from our usual clubbing events, we decided to hold a sort of meet and greet to two important sets of people — our panel of excellent contributors who have smeared the magazine with their various talents. Together with the editorial team, they make up the lifeblood of UNO.

Also as important are our friends from the Internet community — bloggers who have helped spread the word about UNO’s revamp, attended our events, and even participate in our community reviews for some of our articles.

We overloaded with Krispy Kreme donuts and coffee. As an added treat, Arnold Arre treated us to a special screening of his first short film, Chapter One.

Hey Blogger Friends, Let’s Gather — 7:00 PM July 29 ’09 at Fully Booked

    July 23, 2009

    unotransition2

What: UNO Magazine Bloggers and Contributors Night
    When: 7:00 PM July 29 2009
Where: 4th Floor, Fully Booked Forum, Bonifacio High Street

Not that we’re joining the blogging event bandwagon, but we’ve been strong on the Internet ever since the new staff took over. Most of the editors and contributors have their own healthy dose of blogs and social networks that it would be a crime to ignore the reach our good ‘ol UNO has made on the Internet.

So here’s the deal. Let’s take a break from the usual clubbing routine for something different. On July 29 at 7:00PM we’re holding an informal meet up with our blogger friends and contributors at the Fully Booked FORUM (4th floor!) at Bonifacio High Street. What’s going to happen? Well we’re going to bare all and answer all the questions you may have and perhaps have you going home with a little bit more knowledge about the publishing industry, marketing print, and how print transitions to the Internet locally. We’ll talk about why we revamped UNO, how exactly we did it, and the new design philosophy behind the new and improved magazine. Let’s talk paper stock. Cover shoots. Refocus on our events. Our blog and the community behind it.

So if you’ve been wanting to meet the people behind UNO in a more casual environment — editors and contributors (that would be RJ, Juan, Erwin, Shawn, Luis, Yvette, Ramon, Mihk, Denise, Jayvee, France — the list goes on!), then this meet up is something you should definitely not miss! And yeah, we all want to meet you because we want to hear what you think :)

Oh and as an additional treat, Arnold Arre and his lovely wife Cynthia will be doing a special screening of their new short film, Chapter One during the event. How this ties in with UNO … you have to see it!

No big guest list or anything. You’re all free to come. Just leave a comment below this post or fill this out so we more or less know how many can make it.
