John Sayles is an Irish-American author, independent film director, and screenwriter. He has received numerous awards for his works in film and literature. He has authored a number of novels, including The Anarchist’s Convention and Other Stories, Dillinger in Hollywood: New and Selected Short Stories, Los Gusanos, among others. His first published work, a short story on how a trucker became the stuff of American road legend, entitled “I-80 Nebraska,” won an O. Henry Award in 1975. His book Union Dues, which centers on a 17-year-old runaway and his adventures—and misadventures—in the turbulent 60s, was nominated for both a National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977.
Sayles was also awarded the John Steinbeck Award, the John Cassavetes Award, the Ian McLellan Hunter Award, and most notably, Lifetime Achievement by the prestigious Writer’s Guild of America.
This June 25, 2011, the Philippine launch of Sayles’s latest literary endeavor A Moment in the Sun will be held in the Atrium G/L of Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street at 3:00 p.m.
Sayles was recently in the Philippines to shoot and promote his film Amigo, which starred local veteran actors Joel Torre, Bembol Roco, Rio Locsin, and Ronnie Lazaro. During his visit in February 2011 he also gave a talk on the Filipino-American war and premiered his film in various locations around the Philippines, Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street included. His seeming fascination for this historical period is also made evident in his new book A Moment in the Sun, published by McSweeney’s.
Much like his other works, A Moment in the Sun is a sprawling affair; touching on various landmark events in history such as the discovery of gold in the Yukon to racism in North Carolina to the explosion of a battleship in a Cuban harbor—which would lead to the war with Cuba and Spain to America’s eventual colonization of the Philippines. Richly detailed and ambitious—and ultimately successful—in scope, the book’s characters play out the specific points in history that they represent to the hilt.
Since it was launched in the Philippines in the ‘90s, Kickers has been more popularly known to stylish teens who wanted to be in the know on the latest shoe trends. One of the country’s most famous rock n’ roll stars, Nathan Azarcon looks back at almost two decades of playing music and reveals what he’s doing next.
Text by Erwin Romulo; Photographs by Anna Hyde; Styling by Eric Poliquit; Grooming by Marie Tan; shot on location at About A Chair store
Nathan Azarcon’s bass guitar weighs approximately 11 pounds. Not that that gives us an accurate indication of how much his instrument weighs in on every band he’s ever joined, on the music they make, or on the impact its sound has on an audience whenever he takes the stage. During our interview though, it is the physical weight that’s heavy on his mind. He’s just pulled a muscle on the lower part of his back while doing some training in the gym with an old friend, guitarist Junji Lerma. When we meet Azarcon at his place in San Juan, he’s lying on his couch, playing the video game Modern Warfare. He’s supposed to be at a jam session the next day, but he’s decided to reschedule to allow for his muscle to heal. When he does
pick up the bass, to let us hear a few things he’s been working on, he does so sitting down. Smiling, he’s visibly uncomfortable. Whether playing onstage or recording in the studio, he is clearly at his best standing on his two feet—or, at least, with the active use of them. Read more…
The Ayala Malls continues to provide its customers with innovative entertainment through Style Origin. Last April, the Ayala malls flew in 2 of the most influential faces in fashion today, America’s Next Top Model judge and photographer Nigel Barker and runway coach Miss J Alexander.
They were invited to do a series of talks in some key Ayala malls and also to meet and greet their fans. UNO was fortunate enough to be invited at their presscon that happened at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel where the media had the chance to ask both Nigel and Miss J questions regarding beauty, fashion, tips about modeling & photography, in fact there were a few walk-offs that happened during the presscon between Miss J and some of our top models here in Manila.
It was a fun and very educational presscon. Here are some photos from it.
UNO rocks out this month with our very special Music Issue, featuring one of the country’s biggest rock stars on the cover: Nathan Azarcon. (This is, by the way, only the second time in the magazine’s nine-year history that we’ve put a solo male on the cover; the very first one was Manny Pangilinan.)
Inside, we combine two of our biggest passions — women and music — in a massive section featuring artists established and up-and-coming, including Lea Salonga, Barbie Almalbis, Celeste Legaspi, Sarah Gaugler, Vernie Varga, Katwo Librando, Kitchie Nadal, Myrene Academia, Armi Millare and many more. Also, editors Erwin Romulo and Luis Katigbak show off their picks for the best local music of the 2000s so far.
Those of you who have daydreamed of dating the hotter-than-hot Jacq Yu (or at least gazing at some incredible pix of her): we’ve got you covered. Also, the lovely Denise Montecillo joins us as we stuff our faces at Mercato Centrale. Jinno Rufino meets the NBA All-Stars, Eric Melendez talks about how we acquire music today, Lorely Trinidad tells us about growing up Fil-Am in a hip-hop world, Caliph8 shows us how to dig for rare vinyl, and Tricia Gosingtian says hello to New York City. That’s not all of course, but you’ll have to grab the issue to find out more.
(UNO’s Music special should be played at high volume, preferably in a residential area.)

Ayala Museum’s DesignTalks is a lecture series that brings prominent and pioneering Filipino creative professionals to the center stage. Lined up for this April is the creative duo who call themselves Everywhere We Shoot, scheduled to talk on 16 April 2011, 3:00 pm at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Lobby, and whose works will also be on exhibit at the Third Floor Glasslane starting on the day of the talk.
Composed of Ryan Vergara and Garovs Garrovillo, their moniker is not just the duo’s name but also a statement of intent, a manifesto of sorts in praise of the ambulant imagination. They both trained at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde’s School of Design & Arts (Ryan was a Multimedia Arts major while Garovs was in Fashion Design and Merchandising).
Their work has appeared in almost every major magazine in the country as well as a number of publications abroad. They’ve also done commissions to do brand campaigns, record sleeves, and lookbooks for top Filipino designers.
They’ve established an inimitable style of art through photography, fashion, and graphic design—characteristically ironic and playful and always with a hint of humor. They simplify the complicated, and exaggerate the basics. The success of their partnership is that they create images that refuse to stay put.
Tickets are sold for Php 300 regular rate, and discounted at Php 150 for students, teachers, senior citizens and Ayala Museum members.

Get ready: Anberlin is set to leave their mark on Manila this March 9
Being a teenager is always tough, and being one in this past decade was no exception. Thankfully, pop-punk band Anberlin made it all worthwhile. Formed in 2002 and led by frontman Stephen Christian together with Deon Rexroat, Joey Milligan, Nate Young, and Christian McAlhaney, Anberlin has made a name with powerful and infectious songs like “A Day Late” and “Glass to the Arson.”
Shortly after signing with Tooth & Nail Records in 2002, the band released their first album Blueprints for the Black Market in 2003. Their debut album proved to be a success with songs such as “Readyfuels” and “Foreign Language.”
Their sophomore album was an even greater success. Entitled Never Take Friendship Personal, Anberlin gained an even wider audience, thanks to powerhouse songs such as “Paperthin Hymn” and “Time & Confusion.” With Never Take Friendship Personal, Anberlin not only set themselves apart from other pop-punk bands, but also cemented their reputation as a rock and roll force to contend with.
After two successful albums, Anberlin released Cities in 2007, gifting the world with songs like “Adelaide” and one of my personal favorites “Dismantle.Repair.” Just a year later, they released another album called New Surrender. With this album, what was old became new, with the band reworking old songs such as “Feel Good Drag.” The band also gave us their most upbeat song yet. Called “Haight Street,” I can say that this song will get you hooked within seconds.
In 2010, the band released their latest album Dark is the Way, Light is a Place with “Impossible” as their carrier single. It was also in 2010 that the band announced they would be coming to Manila in this March to rock the house at A.Venue in Makati.
UNO was able to interview guitarist Christian McAlhaney via email to find out about where the band got their name, and about their albums, world domination, and hints at what songs they’ll be playing for the Filipino crowd.
I’m sure you get this a lot, but what does [the name] Anberlin mean or represent? Where did the name come from, and who suggested it? What were some of the other band names that were suggested or considered?
It has a pretty deep meaning for all of us actually. When we all first started playing together we had more of a hippy, New Agey, jam bandy kind of sound. I can’t remember who first suggested it, but someone came up with the name Amber Wind, and we just all fell in love with that immediately. As time went by, our sound progressed and changed to what it is now, and Amber Wind just didn’t have the same ring to it that it used to, so after much brainstorming we came up with Anberlin.
You guys have a distinct sound for each album. Also, each song has its own rhyme and reason. What song, from each album, is your favorite?
Blueprints: “Readyfuels.” Never Take…: “Dance Dance Christa Päffgen.” Cities: “Unwinding Cable Car.” Lost Songs: “The Haunting.” New Surrender: “Blame Me! Blame Me!” Dark is the Way: “Prey Tell”
Arguably, your most successful album is Never Take Friendship Personal, could you share your experiences in creating that album? How did it differ from your other albums?
It was different for me than the past two albums because I recorded on those (New Surrender, Dark is the Way) and not on Never Take, but I heard they had an amazing time recording that one.
EVERYBODY knows who Deftones are. That’s how amazing this band is. Ever since they were formed in 1988 in Sacramento, California, they haven’t stopped making and playing songs we fans like to call masterpieces.
The band consist of Chino Moreno on lead vocals and guitar, Stephen Carpenter on guitar, Chi Cheng on bass, Frank Delgado on keyboards and turntables, and Abe Cunningham on drums and percussion. To date, they have released SIX brilliant albums from Adrenaline (1994–1996), Around the Fur (1997–1999), White Pony (2000–2002), Deftones (2003–2005), Saturday Night Wrist (2006–2007), and the latest and most amazing yet, Diamond Eyes (2010-present).
