July 25, 2011ONCE NAMED BY THE LOCAL FASHION PRESS AS THE “ANTI-IT GIRL”, THIS HALF-THAI/HALF-KIWI—BUT PHILIPPINE BORN AND BRED—MODEL WAS AN ICONOCLAST IN HER OWN WAY. CONFOUNDING EXPECTATIONS INSTEAD OF RAISING HELL, SHE’S EMERGED FROM THE TURBULENCE OF BEING “MANILA’S MOST WANTED” WITHOUT HER HEAD BEING BLOWN OFF BY THE HYPE. IN FACT, SHE’S SENSING A CHANGE IN THE AIR AND IS EAGER ANTICIPATING WHAT IT’LL BRING…
Perhaps because things are shifting, my chat with Ornusa Cadness turns to talk of potential. Which is everywhere: in the bushes I pass walking to the interview, leaves yellowed and brittle despite two weeks of rain, in the humid wind I have to hike into to keep my current heading. (I had just read two poets discussing the same over a social networking site: “Something’s about to happen,” one writes but does not elaborate, maybe wishing for the change to be quiet in its unfolding.)
Ornusa too is aware of it, and wishes to ride its soundless crest. She’s excited to be featured in UNO again after four years, noting the magazine’s fresh look, praises its improved content, and begins to explain that she’s looking for the same reinvention.
